At the foot of Mount Vesuvius are the remains of the ancient city of Pompei. Numerous buildings are still standing, entire houses, temples, complete walls have been recovered, no other site illustrates the reality and size of a Roman city so vividly. The site is a unique mix of historical evidence, a vibrant narrative of the daily life of the time but, above all, a tangible testimony of the tragic end of Pompeii. Walking through the narrow streets of Pompeii you can admire frescoes, stuccos, mosaics, street graffiti and fountains. It is thrilling to observe the different constructions, so well preserved that one can almost imagine being a rich matron or a simple merchant who, intent on their normal daily activities, go to the amphitheater or the forum, to purchase in the shops, or relax at spa or tavern. The long itinerary also includes a visit to the private houses of nobles and ordinary citizens, to the tombs of the ancestors and to the Villa of the Mysteries. It is believed that there are more surprises yet to be uncovered at the site, in fact about a third of the city is still underground. Not far from Pompeii we find the small town of Oplontis, also buried by the Vesuvius in 79 AD. Here you can visit a rich Roman villa which was recently rediscovered (1960), its remarkable mural paintings are perfectly preserved.
